The warning bell rings at 9:00am. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before to ensure your student is in class on time. Do not drop off students earlier than 8:50; we do not have before-school supervision. School starts at 9:05am and releases at 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Students not in their classrooms by the 9:05am bell are tardy and must go to the office for a Tardy Pass.

Please have your student bring a standard sized backpack. A homework folder will be provided and many basic supplies are available in the classroom. You can ask your teacher if anything else is needed. Some teachers might share an Amazon Wish List if you are interested in supporting this way as well.

Do not bring any electronics devices to school. See Electronic Devices Policy below.

No, devices are available in the classrooms. Individual teachers will determine when it is necessary for their students to bring devices to/from school. Personal devices are not allowed - you must have a SJUSD issued device for use at school. The wireless system is not set up to allow personal devices onto the network.

CELL PHONES, SMARTWATCHES & TECHNOLOGY DEVICES

The district recognizes that smartphones and other mobile devices can support learning but may also disrupt the classroom. With the updated school board policy 5131.5 to reflect new CA Education Code, students are expected to keep their cell phones, smartwatches, gizmos, and any other electronic device turned off and in their backpack during the school day unless noted in an IEP or 504 Plan. Students shall not use smartphones or other mobile communication devices (e.g. smartwatches) while at a school site or under the supervision and control of a district employee (e.g. school-sponsored trips) during the school day, “bell to bell” (including lunch and recess).

Your student will enter through the front gate and go to the office for a Tardy Pass. If you are late due to a medical or legal appointment, please bring a note from the doctor or agency.

If you know in advance that your student will be late (i.e. for a scheduled appointment), please call our 24-hour Attendance line (408) 287-6251 or email (enash@sjusd.org) first thing in the morning. Let us know the student’s first and last name, their teacher's name, the reason for the tardy, and the approximate time they will arrive.

Do not go to the classroom without a Tardy Pass.

The gates and campus will officially open at 8:55am - students and parents are not allowed on campus before this time. Arrive early enough to find parking.  At the 9:00 Welcome bell, students will proceed to their classroom and line up outside per their teacher's instructions. Parents/guardians wanting to walk with their students may do so at this time, but then should leave campus at the 9:05 bell.

Students arriving after the 9:05 bell rings must check in to the office for a Tardy Pass.

What gate does my student use to enter campus?

For the 2025-26 school year, students may enter through any of the unlocked gates (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8).

If your student has forgotten their lunch, glasses, books, homework, etc., please deliver the items to the office, clearly labeled with the student’s name and teacher’s name. We will not interrupt classroom instruction to notify your child, however, we will email the teacher to ask that they send the student to get the forgotten item during a break.

Help your student practice being responsible for remembering their own lunch and water bottle each day. Teach your child/ren to check the table outside of the office for forgotten items in case the teacher is unable to read their email in a timely manner.  Students can get a snack or lunch from the cafeteria if it is not on the table, or they can use the drinking fountains in the classrooms and around campus.

Reed is a closed campus during school hours, however, parents are allowed on campus to walk their students to class (gates open at 8:55am) and pick them up at the end of the day (gates open at 2:50pm). See “What does arrival look like?” and “What does dismissal look like?” sections.

The Reed Elementary PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is excited to welcome you, your family and student(s) to our school. The PTA uses the Konstella app to communicate with parents. For more information, please visit the PTA section of our website.

SJUSD is offering all students the option of receiving free brunch and lunch. Brunch will be served during morning recess. Meals are curated by our health and nutrition team and the offerings rotate throughout the week.  Note, our brunch recess is not until after the first instructional block so please ensure your child has eaten breakfast before coming to school. We all know how challenging it is to be our best if we are hungry. Visit the Student Nutrition section of our website for more information.

You can always pack your own snacks and lunch. If you are sending your student to school with food be mindful of having packages they can open themselves, food they can eat with appropriate utensils or cleanly with their fingers.

Please pack a refillable/reusable water bottle for your student. There are drinking fountains around campus and in classrooms.

If a student shows symptoms of illness while at school, the child will be evaluated in the Health Office. If necessary, the student’s parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up their child from school and will be given instructions on when the student may return.

We are a PBIS school (Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports). Our expectations are clearly stated, written, and practiced by staff, students, and families. We encourage using these specific terms and implementing them at home for routines, chores, and anything else that promotes treating others the way they would like to be treated and understanding the importance of a good attitude and effort. When something is done that does not meet these expectations re-teach them and support their growth. When they do meet these expectations reward them by recognizing the specific behavior that you want to see emulated again and again.  Visit the Positive School Culture section for more details.

School ends at 3:01pm*. At approximately 2:50pm, we will open gates 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 (see Reed Campus map in the What is the Arrival/Drop Off procedure? section above). At this time, parents/guardians may come onto campus to greet their students at their classrooms. Please do not enter campus earlier than 2:50pm and be mindful that school is still in session until 3:01pm.

* NOTE: Students not picked up within 10 minutes of school ending will be sent to the office and parents/guardians will be called. We do not have after school supervision in the office, classrooms, playgrounds, or other areas on campus, so please be on time. If you are running late, please call the office at (408) 535-6247 or make arrangements for another trusted adult to watch your student/s until you arrive.

1. Call (408) 535-6247 or email the office (enash@sjusd.org) and the teacher to let us know in advance if possible.

2. Bring your ID* to the office and sign them out. We will call the classroom when you arrive. Please allow a few extra minutes in case the office is busy, or it takes time for the student to come to the office if they’re at lunch, PE, music, library, etc.

* NOTE: Only parents, guardians, and people listed  on the student's Emergency Contact list may pick up a student during the school day. If you would like to add people to the Emergency Contact list, please do so through the Parent Portal or come to the school to fill out the form.

Reed Elementary does not provide before- or after-school care, but there are 
on-campus programs that do:

• ELOP  / Think Together - By invitation only for students who qualify (After-school only). elop@sjusd.org
• YMCA (Before- and after-school).
• There are many after-school clubs and activities offered in sessions throughout the year. See Principal Ponzio’s weekly Family Bulletins via Parent Square for information or come into the office for a flyer.

Due to our ever-changing enrollment, and very few instances of pure grade level numbers, combo classes (2 grades in 1 classroom) can be utilized as an opportunity for our students. We understand the challenges of having multiple curriculums to teach. We are also fully aware of how to get the most out of these classes and the opportunity it provides to many of our learners to receive extra support and guidance in small group instruction as well as serve as leaders, mentors, and peer-to-peer teachers. Our staff collaborates extremely well and works together to ensure all grade levels are supported and challenged with the appropriate rigor.

The Infinite Campus Parent Portal is the best way to stay informed about all aspects of your SJUSD student’s education. You can update contact information, designate emergency pick up people, check attendance, see grades (middle and high school), etc.. The Student Calendar is published up to 3 years in advance so you can see when school is out of session or if there are early release days. This is helpful when planning vacations so your student is not absent during the instructional periods.
